Metal Fence Installation in Vancouver (North & West)

A good metal fence should suit the way you use your property: an open front yard, a secure business entrance, a boundary for your dog or a more private outdoor space. North Shore Iron Works designs, fabricates and installs metal fences for homes and commercial properties in North Vancouver, West Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

We help you compare steel, aluminum and ornamental designs around your priorities, site conditions and budget. The right choice depends on the complete fence system, including its finish, posts, gates and maintenance needs.

Is Metal Fencing Right for Your Property?

Metal fencing can define a boundary while keeping a garden, driveway or view visible. It also offers options for decorative entrances and controlled access. An open picket fence, however, will not screen a neighbouring patio, and a metal fence alone cannot guarantee security or prevent every pet from escaping.

  • For an open front yard: consider a simple picket or ornamental design that complements the house without overwhelming the landscaping.
  • For privacy: compare the proposed panel openings and sightlines. Explore our privacy fencing installation if screening is the main goal.
  • For children and pets: discuss the openings, clearance below the fence, gate latch and changes in ground level. These details matter as much as the material.
  • For a business: start with who needs access, what needs protection and how deliveries will move through the site.

If you are still comparing materials, our fencing installation in Vancouver include composite fences and wood fences installation as well as metal options.

Compare Steel, Aluminum and Ornamental Metal Fences

Start with the purpose of the fence, then compare the material and construction. A heavier panel is not automatically the best solution: the posts, connections, foundations and gate supports must also suit the design.

Metal fence options and the details to compare before choosing
Option Why consider it? What should the quote explain?
Steel fencing A choice for rigid panels, custom fabrication and applications where a robust barrier is a priority. Section sizes, post supports, corrosion protection, treatment of welds and the care needed if the finish is damaged.
Aluminum fencing A lighter metal option for open boundaries and properties where limiting iron rust is a priority. Panel construction, finish preparation, compatible fasteners, gate support and care appropriate to the exposure.
Wrought iron or ornamental designs Traditional pickets, scrollwork and decorative details for an entrance or a fence that matches the architecture. The actual base metal, custom details, finish system and repair approach. The appearance alone does not identify the material.
Chain link fencing A practical metal mesh option when enclosing a larger area and retaining visibility are priorities. Mesh specification, posts, protective finish, gate configuration and whether the design meets the intended containment needs.

For a closer look at specific designs, explore aluminum fences installation, wrought iron fencing and chain link fences. If you prefer a wrought iron look, ask whether the proposal specifies iron or ornamental steel; the finish and maintenance should match the actual material.

Metal Fence Finishes for Wet and Coastal Conditions

In a wet climate, durability depends on how the whole assembly manages moisture. Exposed steel, damaged coatings, unsuitable fasteners and water trapped around connections can affect performance. Tell us if the fence will be near salt spray, road de-icing salt, irrigation or consistently damp planting beds.

Steel: Understand What Is Under the Colour Coat

Paint and powder coating provide a protective barrier on steel. If that barrier is damaged, corrosion can develop at the exposed surface. Galvanizing adds a zinc coating; combining hot-dip galvanizing with a compatible paint or powder topcoat is known as a duplex system. These are different specifications, rather than interchangeable descriptions of a black fence.

Ask which system is proposed, how welds and installation damage will be treated, and whether it suits your exposure. The American Galvanizers Association explains galvanizing and duplex coating systems. Availability and suitability should be confirmed for your project before you choose a finish.

Aluminum: Corrosion Resistant, with Care Still Required

Aluminum does not develop the iron rust associated with steel. Its natural oxide layer helps resist corrosion, but that does not make every aluminum assembly immune to damage or unsuitable exposure. The Hydro aluminum design manual explains this protective layer and its limits. Finish condition, cleaning and compatible connections still matter.

Have Question Before You Start?

Our team can help you choose the right solution, explain your options & provide a clear guidance for your project.

Before approving a finish, request: the base material, surface preparation, coating system, colour, hardware specification, cleaning instructions and applicable warranty terms. This gives you a more useful comparison than a promise of a maintenance-free fence.

Design the Fence Around Its Purpose

Front Yards and Decorative Boundaries

Consider the view from both the street and the house. Picket spacing, top details and the gate location should work with planting, paths and the entrance. Our decorative fencing service can help you explore a traditional or simpler contemporary appearance.

Property Perimeters and Commercial Access

A perimeter fence should follow the confirmed boundary and leave room for the access you need. For commercial properties, consider deliveries, pedestrian routes, visibility and how gates will be secured after hours. Explore perimeter fencing, commercial fences installer and security fencing for these different requirements. A security proposal should explain the construction and access strategy, rather than rely on material or height alone.

Pets, Children and Pool Enclosures

For a dog enclosure, discuss your pet’s size and behaviour, possible footholds, gaps beneath stepped panels and the way the gate closes. For a pool, choose a design specifically reviewed as a pool barrier. Height, openings, climbability, gate operation and latch placement need to meet the requirements that apply to the property.

Our pool fencing service is the starting point for this work. Review the City of North Vancouver’s pool safety guidance or the District of North Vancouver’s outdoor pool and hot tub guidance, as applicable. Confirm current requirements with your municipality before fabrication; a standard garden fence should not be assumed to be an approved pool enclosure.

Plan Gates, Slopes and Post Supports Together

The gate is usually the part of a fence you use most. Decide whether the opening needs to accommodate a person, stroller, lawn equipment, vehicle or deliveries, then check the available swing or sliding space. A gate should not obstruct a neighbouring driveway, shared access route or public sidewalk.

On a slope, compare a stepped layout with a design that follows the grade where the selected system allows it. Check how either approach changes the bottom gaps and gate clearance. Posts fixed into soil, concrete or a retaining wall need different assessments; existing masonry should be reviewed before assuming it can support a fence or gate.

Planning a Fence with Your Neighbours

A shared boundary affects both properties. Before committing to a design, discuss the proposed fence line, height, appearance on each side, gate swing and access for installation. Agree on any voluntary cost sharing and future maintenance arrangements in writing so everyone understands the plan.

  • Confirm the boundary: an existing fence or hedge does not establish the legal property line. If its location is uncertain, consult a Registered BC Land Surveyor before setting posts.
  • Discuss privacy and views: compare an open metal design with screening where the fence faces a neighbour’s patio or windows.
  • Protect shared access: identify easements, shared paths and any permissions needed to enter the neighbouring property.
  • Plan the work: discuss temporary access, pets, landscaping and how the boundary will be secured while the old fence is removed.
  • Check approvals: for strata properties, establish who can approve the design and whether common property is involved.

A neighbour’s agreement does not replace municipal approval or resolve an uncertain boundary. The City of Vancouver’s fence guidance explains the role of a land surveyor and distinguishes boundary disputes from municipal fence requirements. Use the rules for your own municipality when planning your project.

Metal Fencing Across North Vancouver and West Vancouver

We serve properties across the North Shore, including the City and District of North Vancouver and West Vancouver. Tell us the street and municipality, rather than just “North Vancouver,” so the design review uses the right local requirements.

For a property in Lower, Central or Upper Lonsdale, Lynn Valley, Edgemont, Canyon Heights or Deep Cove, see our North Vancouver service area. In our West Vancouver service area, we can discuss projects in Ambleside, Dundarave and the British Properties. The property assessment should address its actual slope, exposure, access and existing structures.

We also serve Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Surrey and Langley. View all service areas or contact us about your address and scheduling.

Nearby North Shore Landmarks and Fence Planning

These landmarks can help describe where your property is when you enquire. The questions below are prompts for assessing your own site; proximity to a landmark does not determine the finish, installation method or approvals.

Local reference points for North Vancouver and West Vancouver enquiries
Landmark Nearby area A useful question for your property
The Shipyards Lower Lonsdale and the Lonsdale Quay area, North Vancouver Is the proposed fence exposed to salt spray, and how much access is available for installing posts and gates?
Lynn Canyon Park Lynn Valley, North Vancouver Are roots, planting beds or drainage conditions likely to affect the fence line and post locations?
Capilano Suspension Bridge Park Capilano and Canyon Heights, North Vancouver How will the design address changes in grade and keep gates clear of the driveway or footpath?
Grouse Mountain Upper Capilano and the Nancy Greene Way area Does the gate have clearance for the property’s seasonal conditions and the way its driveway is maintained?
Ambleside Park Ambleside, West Vancouver Would open pickets retain the preferred view, and what finish is appropriate for the actual coastal exposure?
Dundarave Park Dundarave, West Vancouver Where is privacy needed between neighbouring patios, and where would an open fence work better?

What to Expect from Design to Installation

  1. Discuss the project: share your priorities, approximate dimensions, photos, preferred style and any existing fence problems.
  2. Review the site and requirements: establish the fence line, gate openings, grade changes, support conditions and approval responsibilities before finalizing the design.
  3. Review the written proposal: compare the material, finish, drawings, installation scope, exclusions, warranty terms and proposed schedule.
  4. Prepare for installation: coordinate required permissions, access, utility information and any temporary boundary arrangements before excavation or removal.
  5. Check the completed work: review the fence, gate movement, latches and finish together, and clarify the care instructions and how to request service.

For excavation, use BC 1 Call and follow the relevant infrastructure owners’ instructions before digging. Private irrigation, lighting and other buried installations also need to be identified; do not assume every underground line is covered by a locate response.

For local planning information, consult the City of North Vancouver’s bylaws, the District of North Vancouver’s zoning guidance or West Vancouver’s building and development information. Confirm which requirements and approvals apply to the particular address and design.

What Affects the Installed Cost of a Metal Fence?

Two fences of the same length can have different installed costs. A simple run on accessible ground is a different project from ornamental panels on a slope with masonry connections and a wide gate. The quote should account for:

  • Material, panel construction, height and total fence length.
  • Custom details, drawings and the specified protective finish.
  • Gate size, support posts, hinges, latches and any access-control equipment.
  • Ground conditions, foundations, retaining walls and site access.
  • Removal and disposal of the existing fence and any agreed restoration.
  • Applicable taxes, approval work and other inclusions or exclusions.

Request a written scope so you can compare equivalent designs. Confirm how unforeseen site conditions or requested changes will be priced and approved. For warranty coverage, ask what applies to fabrication, installation, the finish and hardware, including any maintenance obligations and exposure exclusions.

Maintenance, Repairs and When to Replace a Fence

Metal fences need periodic attention. Follow the specified finish and hardware care instructions, remove accumulated debris, keep drainage paths clear and check gates for smooth movement. Inspect for coating damage, loose connections, shifting posts and corrosion, especially after impact or severe weather.

A damaged section may be repairable when the remaining structure and supports are sound. Widespread corrosion, failed foundations or repeated gate movement problems call for a broader assessment. Covering rust with paint will not restore metal that has lost structural capacity.

Ask about fence repair, welding contractors and our wider repair and maintenance services. Share photos of the damage and the surrounding fence so we can discuss repair or replacement options.
