If the goal is blocking sightlines or keeping people out, Privacy Fences give full coverage for a backyard or patio, Semi-Privacy Fences trade some coverage for airflow and light, and Security Fences are built specifically to resist intrusion for higher-risk residential or commercial sites.
Residential Fences are scoped to a single-family property, while Commercial Fences are sized for strata buildings, retail sites, and other higher-traffic properties. Perimeter Fencing defines a property boundary at scale, and Decorative Fences are chosen when the fence itself is meant to be a design feature rather than just a barrier.
Pool Fencing is built to the self-closing, self-latching, non-climbable standard covered below, and Garden Fencing is a lighter-duty option for keeping animals out of planting beds without walling off the whole yard.
| Material | Typical Price (per linear foot, installed) | Maintenance | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain Link | $50 – $150 | Low | Budget fencing, pet containment, construction sites |
| Wood | $150 – $300 | Higher – staining/sealing needed | Classic backyard privacy |
| Aluminum | $150 – $300 | Low | Pool enclosures, low-maintenance boundaries |
| Composite | $150 – $300 | Low | Wood look, less upkeep |
| Metal / Steel | $150 – $300+ | Low to moderate | Security fencing, commercial perimeters |
| Wrought Iron | $300+ | Higher – coating upkeep | Ornamental and character properties |
| Glass | $300+ | Moderate – regular cleaning | Pool surrounds, view-preserving boundaries |
These are general starting points length, height, gates, terrain, and site access all move the final number, which is why we quote after a free on-site look at the property.
Fence rules are set at the municipal level, not provincially, so the exact height you’re allowed depends on which of our service-area cities your property is in and where on the lot the fence sits. As two real examples:
| Location on Lot | Typical Maximum Height | Source |
|---|---|---|
| North Vancouver – anywhere on the lot | 1.22 m (4 ft) | City of North Vancouver Zoning Bylaw 1995, No. 6700 |
| North Vancouver – behind the front face of the house | 1.83 m (6 ft) | City of North Vancouver Zoning Bylaw 1995, No. 6700 |
| Vancouver – front yard | 1.2 m (4 ft) | City of Vancouver Zoning and Development By-law, Section 10.10 |
Pool fencing carries its own safety standard on top of height bylaws: gates need to be self-closing and self-latching, the fence generally needs to be at least 1.2 m (4 ft) high, gaps can’t allow a 4-inch (100 mm) sphere through, and there can be no horizontal rails or ledges on the outside that would make the fence easy to climb. Because the exact bylaw differs by municipality and can change, we recommend confirming the specifics with your local building or planning department before finalizing a design, we’re glad to help you figure out what applies to your address.
We look at the property, confirm the boundary and any bylaw constraints that apply, and talk through material and style options before quoting.
Your fence is built to spec and installed on site. Simple chain link or aluminum runs move faster than custom wrought iron or long privacy runs with multiple gates.
We check the finished fence against the design and against any applicable height or setback rule before considering the job done.
We build and install fences across Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Coquitlam, Burnaby, Surrey, and Langley, plus Port Moody and Maple Ridge. Outside these areas, get in touch and we’ll let you know if we can help.
Usually not for a standard-height residential fence, but that varies by municipality, and height and placement rules still apply even without a permit. Pool enclosures and taller commercial fencing are more likely to need a permit. We’ll help you confirm what your specific address requires.
It depends on the city and where the fence sits on your lot. As an example, North Vancouver allows up to 1.22 m (4 ft) anywhere on a residential lot and up to 1.83 m (6 ft) once you’re behind the front face of the house, while Vancouver caps front-yard fences at 1.2 m (4 ft). We confirm the exact limit for your address before finalizing a design.
There’s no single rule that applies everywhere, it usually comes down to what you and your neighbour agree to, and we’d recommend getting that agreement in writing before work starts, especially if the cost is being split. We can provide a detailed quote you can share with a neighbour as part of that conversation.
Solid wood or composite privacy panels give full coverage. A taller aluminum or metal fence with narrow spacing can also work if you want something more low-maintenance, though it won’t block sightlines as completely as a solid panel.
At minimum, a self-closing and self-latching gate, a fence height of roughly 1.2 m (4 ft) or more, no gaps wide enough to pass a 4-inch sphere, and no horizontal rails on the outside that a child could use to climb. The exact requirement is set locally, so we confirm it against your municipality before building.
Most residential projects land between $50 and $300 per linear foot depending on material, with premium options like wrought iron or glass running higher. The table above breaks this down by material, but a free on-site visit is the only way to get an exact number for your property.
Aluminum, composite, and chain link need the least attention and can last decades. Wood needs periodic staining or sealing to avoid rot in a wet climate, and wrought iron needs its coating checked periodically to stay ahead of rust.
A standard residential fence is often installed within a day or two once materials are ready. Fabrication time runs longer for custom ironwork or long privacy runs than for chain link or standard aluminum panels.
