Is a Composite Fence Right for Your Property?

Composite fencing combines wood fibres and plastic in a manufactured board or panel. The exact blend, surface finish and supporting system vary by product. It is worth considering when you want the appearance of a solid fence with less routine surface maintenance than a conventional wood fence.

  • Privacy for everyday use: close-fitting panels can screen ground-level views of a patio, seating area or garden. Height and position still matter, especially when neighbouring properties sit at different elevations.
  • Less finishing work: many composite systems are designed to be used without regular painting or staining. They still need cleaning and checks of posts, connections and gate hardware.
  • A coordinated appearance: horizontal, vertical and mixed-material designs let you work with the house, landscaping and adjoining boundaries.

Composite may be a less suitable choice if your main priority is the lowest initial price, preserving an open view, or changing the fence colour through future repainting. It also needs an appropriate support system; a new panel alone will not solve loose posts or an unsuitable foundation. Our fencing services cover other options if composite does not fit your needs.

Composite Fence Styles, Privacy and Gate Options

Horizontal Panels

Horizontal boards create a clean, contemporary boundary. They can work well beside a patio or along a garden, but changes in ground level need planning so the finished line looks intentional. The chosen system determines permitted spans, supports and movement allowances.

Vertical Panels

Vertical boards suit both traditional and modern homes. On a sloping boundary, discuss whether sections can follow the grade or need to step down. Ask to see how the design will handle gaps near the ground before agreeing to the layout.

Composite Panels with Metal Posts

A mixed-material fence combines the panel appearance you prefer with a compatible metal frame or posts. Finish, fasteners and connections need to suit the selected system and the property’s exposure. Where the layout requires a tailored detail, explore our custom fence installation service and custom fabrication installer.

Privacy Screening and Everyday Access

For a shared backyard boundary, compare the views from both properties and decide how much screening you need. Our privacy fencing installation services can help you consider the full layout. If you need access for bins, bikes or garden equipment, plan the opening and swing direction early. See our pedestrian gates and wider gate options for related work.

Questions to consider when comparing fence materials
Material Why consider it? What should you check?
Composite A solid boundary with fewer recurring painting or staining tasks for many systems. Product-specific care, colour weathering, permitted spans, support requirements and warranty terms.
Wood fencing A natural appearance and flexibility in board layout and finish. The timber and treatment specified, exposure, expected upkeep and replacement costs.
Aluminum fencing An option for a lighter visual boundary or a metal design. How much screening the chosen design provides, finish care and suitability for the location.

Compare quotes for the same fence length, height, gate openings and removal work. A panel price on its own does not tell you the cost of a finished fence.

Have Question Before You Start?

Our team can help you choose the right solution, explain your options & provide a clear guidance for your project.

Planning for North Shore Rain, Slopes and Coastal Exposure

For a North Vancouver or West Vancouver fence, look beyond the panel colour. Shade, water runoff, changes in grade and exposure can affect how the complete installation performs. A sheltered side yard and an exposed boundary may need different details.

  • Posts and foundations: assess the ground, existing supports and the loads expected for the chosen fence.
  • Drainage and clearance: plan around runoff, soil levels and the manufacturer’s required ground clearance.
  • Temperature movement: follow the selected system’s installation instructions for gaps, fasteners and spans.
  • Slopes and retaining walls: review the change in elevation and the supporting structure before deciding how to attach anything.
  • Wind and coastal exposure: a solid panel presents a different load from an open fence. Confirm suitable posts, connections and finishes for the actual site.

A fence is not automatically a guardrail for a raised deck, a retaining structure or an approved pool enclosure. If your project involves a raised outdoor space, discuss the separate requirements and our deck railing service.

What to Expect from Consultation to Installation

  1. Start with your goals: share the property address, approximate fence length, preferred appearance and photos of the existing boundary.
  2. Review the site: measurements, grade, access, existing posts and the proposed gate positions help establish a workable layout.
  3. Agree on the specification: confirm the panel system, colour, height, supporting materials and any related fabrication.
  4. Confirm the scope before work: review removal, disposal, site preparation, approvals and responsibilities with the project estimate.
  5. Install and review: the installation should follow the agreed specification and product instructions. At handover, check the finish, gate operation and care information.

Timing depends on the agreed design, material availability, site preparation and any approvals. Ask for the expected schedule with your quote, particularly if you need temporary privacy or access while an existing fence is removed.

How Much Does Composite Fence Installation Cost?

The price depends on the complete scope. A short, accessible boundary on level ground is a different job from a sloping fence with several gates or limited access. We provide project-specific quotes rather than a single price that leaves out important work.

  • Fence length, height and panel or board system.
  • Post, frame, foundation and finish requirements.
  • Old fence removal, disposal and preparation.
  • Ground conditions, grade changes and delivery access.
  • Gate openings, hardware and custom details.
  • Any additional design, approval or supporting work.

Before accepting a quote: check the materials specified, included work, exclusions, applicable taxes, expected timing and payment terms. Ask for the manufacturer’s warranty and any installation warranty separately, including their conditions. Send photos and approximate dimensions through our quote request form to start the conversation.

Planning a Shared Fence with Your Neighbours

A fence affects more than the view from your own patio. It can change daylight, access and the appearance of your neighbour’s garden. Talking through the design early can prevent misunderstandings and make the installation easier to coordinate.

  • Confirm the boundary: an old fence is not proof of the legal property line. If its position is uncertain, have a registered BC land surveyor establish it before finalising the layout.
  • Compare both sides: discuss height, colour, visible posts, panel orientation and screening from different elevations.
  • Agree on access: arrange permission before anyone enters a neighbouring property, and discuss how plants, pets and shared paths will be managed.
  • Write down any shared arrangement: record agreed costs, ownership and future maintenance responsibilities. Do not assume a neighbour must pay half.
  • Keep shared services usable: consider drainage, utility access and gate movement as part of the design.

If the boundary is disputed, resolve its position before installation. For a townhouse, condo or strata property, confirm permission and design requirements with the appropriate property representative.

Fence Height, Approvals and Checks Before Digging

The City of North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver and District of West Vancouver are separate jurisdictions. Confirm which municipality governs your address and check the rules for the fence’s location, height and relationship to streets, driveways, retaining walls or a pool. A rule from another city should not be used to approve your design.

Need Help Planning Your Project?

Tell us what you need and our team will guide you toward the right solution for your space, budget and timeline.

Start with the City of North Vancouver’s bylaw directory, the District of North Vancouver’s zoning bylaw, or West Vancouver’s building and development team. Ask the relevant municipality to confirm the requirements for your property before work begins.

Before post holes are dug, request underground utility information through BC 1 Call and follow the infrastructure owners’ instructions. Also identify private services such as irrigation or lighting cables; do not assume every underground line is covered by a locate response. Agree who will arrange these checks as part of the project scope.

Composite Fence Care, Weathering and Warranty

Low maintenance still means some maintenance. Follow the cleaning guide for the installed product, clear leaves and debris, and check posts, connections and gate hardware periodically. Use only cleaning products and methods the manufacturer permits; confirm the instructions before using a pressure washer or an abrasive cleaner.

Colour can weather, surfaces can become dirty in shaded areas, and individual components may need attention over time. Useful life depends on the particular product, exposure, installation and care. A manufacturer’s warranty is not a promise that every part of the fence will remain unchanged for that entire period.

Keep the product name, care guide, warranty documents and installation invoice together. If an existing fence has loose posts or damaged sections, our fence repair services in Vancouver can be a starting point for discussing repair versus replacement.

Composite Fence FAQs

No. Many products avoid recurring painting or staining, but the fence still needs cleaning and checks of posts, fasteners and gate hardware. Follow the selected manufacturer’s care guide.

There is no single lifespan for every composite fence. The product, supporting system, site exposure, installation and ongoing care all matter. Check the written warranty for the exact product and ask what it covers and excludes.

A sloping site can be considered, but the layout depends on the fence system and grade. Stepped sections or another suitable arrangement may be needed. Share photos of the full boundary, including gaps and retaining walls, so the options can be reviewed.

That depends on your municipality and proposed work. Check the applicable height, location and approval requirements for your address. Front boundaries, retaining walls, pool enclosures and strata properties can need additional consideration.

Some designs provide a similar finish on both sides; others have visible supports or different faces. Check the exact system and agree on appearance, height, access and any shared costs with your neighbour before installation.

A solid fence should not be treated as a guaranteed sound barrier. Noise reduction depends on the whole design, including height, gaps, location and the noise source. If sound control is your main goal, discuss it specifically rather than choosing by panel appearance alone.

Only if the complete enclosure and gate arrangement meet the applicable requirements. A privacy panel alone does not establish suitability. Ask the municipality and your project team to review the full design before ordering.

Composition varies by manufacturer. Ask for the product’s published material information if recycled content matters to you. An environmental claim should apply to the specified product, rather than to composite fencing as a whole.

That needs a site assessment. The posts must be in suitable condition and compatible with the new system, spacing and loads. Replacing panels without checking the supports can leave the original problem unresolved.

Send your address, approximate fence length, preferred height and style, photos, and the number of gate openings. Mention slopes, access restrictions, an existing fence to remove and any neighbour or strata coordination.
