Custom Driveway Gates in Vancouver, North & West Vancouver

A driveway gate should fit the way you enter, park and leave your property. North Shore Iron Works designs, fabricates and installs custom driveway gates for residential and commercial properties. Based in North Vancouver, we offer manual and automated options, with layouts chosen around your driveway opening, available space and access needs.

A gate can help manage vehicle access and, with suitable panels, reduce views into the driveway. It also brings practical questions: where will a car wait while it opens, can pedestrians enter separately, and will the gate clear the ground throughout its travel? These details matter as much as the appearance.

Choose the opening layout before the design

Start with the space the gate needs when fully open. A sliding gate saves swing space, but still needs room beside the entrance. A swing gate needs a clear arc, including clearance above any rising driveway surface.

Driveway gate layouts and their main trade-offs
Layout When to consider it What to check
Single or double swing gates An entrance with enough clear space for hinged panels to open. Panel travel, ground clearance, parked cars and nearby walls. Splitting the opening between two leaves reduces the length of each leaf, but both still need unobstructed movement.
Sliding gates A driveway where a swinging panel would interfere with parking or circulation. A clear run beside the entrance. A tracked system also needs attention to the track, drainage and debris across the driveway.
Cantilever gates An entrance where a track through the vehicle opening is undesirable. Side space for the complete gate, including its support section, and suitable foundations. Removing the track from the opening does not remove the need for maintenance.

These layouts describe how the gate moves; manual or powered operation is a separate choice. For the wider range, explore our gate design and installation services. The definitions in DASMA’s gate terminology guide explain the difference between swing, tracked and cantilever systems.

Manual or automatic: match operation to daily use

Manual gates

A manual gate avoids the motor and powered controls. It can suit an entrance used less frequently, provided the panel is manageable and the latch is easy to reach. Think through opening it in the rain, where you will stop the car, and how visitors or delivery drivers will enter.

Automatic gates

Automatic gate options can make frequent arrivals more convenient. Discuss remotes, keypads or intercom access, the expected number of daily openings, and what happens during a power outage. Battery backup and remote connectivity depend on the selected equipment; confirm them in the specification.

Powered gates need a complete safety plan. Ask how the design addresses trapping points, compatible photoelectric sensors or sensing edges, warning signs and safe control positions. ANSI/CAN/UL 325 covers gate operators and associated systems; it is not a blanket certification of every installation. See UL Solutions’ explanation of gate operator standards and DASMA’s gate safety guidance.

Provide a separate walking entrance where pedestrians need access near an automated vehicle gate. Our pedestrian gate service can be discussed alongside the driveway layout. The walking route should remain outside the moving vehicle gate’s path, as explained in DASMA’s site planning guidance.

Materials, privacy and the finish

Steel, aluminum and ornamental iron designs are available through our driveway gate service. Compare the actual material, panel construction and finish in the quote, rather than choosing from a style name alone.

  • Steel and ornamental metalwork: suitable for custom profiles and decorative details. Exterior steel needs corrosion protection. Ask what coating system is proposed and how scratches or damaged areas should be maintained. The American Galvanizers Association’s coastal guidance explains why exposure and coating selection affect performance.
  • Aluminum: a lighter, corrosion-resistant material. It can still corrode under some conditions, and the hinges, fasteners and finish need care. The Australian Aluminium Council explains these material properties.
  • Open or screened panels: open bars preserve views but offer little visual privacy. Closer screening reduces visibility; review the panel layout together with exit sightlines and the equipment specification.

For waterfront or exposed entrances, ask how salt exposure and wind affect the proposed finish, supports and operator choice. If privacy is needed along the boundary as well, consider the gate together with privacy fencing options, so adjoining heights and finishes can be planned together.

Check property lines, local rules and neighbours early

The City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver are separate municipalities. Confirm which authority covers your address before finalising the gate height, posts or any associated fence and retaining wall work. West Vancouver and Vancouver have their own requirements.

  • City of North Vancouver: check the property’s zoning through the City’s current bylaw directory. Review visibility at the exit and street corners; the City’s boulevard guidance addresses obstructions affecting drivers and pedestrians.
  • District of North Vancouver: review the District’s fence height and placement guidance and confirm the current requirements for your property. Fence placement and combined height above retaining walls need particular attention.
  • West Vancouver: Section 130.17 of the residential zoning regulations sets fence height limits that vary by zone and location on the lot, including rules near retaining walls. Confirm how they apply to your gate and posts.

Keep the proposed gate’s travel within the property and plan enough waiting space to avoid blocking the sidewalk while it opens. Ask the municipality about any approvals needed for the gate, driveway access changes or work on public land. Where the entrance serves emergency vehicles, confirm access arrangements with the local authority; DASMA’s emergency access guidance explains why this is part of gate planning.

For powered systems, agree who will handle electrical work and permits. Technical Safety BC’s permit guidance identifies municipalities, including North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Vancouver, that issue their own electrical permits. Confirm the responsible authority and use an appropriately licensed electrical contractor for the planned work.

Coordinate the shared boundary and installation access

Confirm the boundary from reliable property information; an existing fence may not establish the legal line. If its position is uncertain, resolve it before locating posts or foundations. For a shared driveway, review access rights and agree the arrangement with everyone who uses it.

Before work starts, discuss the proposed height, privacy screening, panel travel and any effect on your neighbour’s entrance or view when leaving their driveway. Agree on permission for any access to their land, working hours, delivery parking and how affected surfaces will be restored. Arrange temporary vehicle and walking access during excavation, concrete work and installation. A neighbour’s agreement does not replace municipal or strata approval.

What affects the price of a driveway gate?

A useful estimate prices the whole entrance, including the work needed to make it function. Two gates of the same width can have different installed costs because their supports, ground conditions and controls differ.

  • Gate construction: opening width, height, material, screening, decorative details and finish.
  • Supporting work: new posts or foundations, the condition of existing pillars, slope, drainage and any engineering needed.
  • Operation: manual hardware or motor, safety devices, access controls and any specified backup power.
  • Electrical and surface work: power supply, conduit routes, trenching, and reinstating paving or landscaping.
  • Project access: removal of the old gate, delivery arrangements and maintaining access to a home, shared driveway or business.

Ask for a written breakdown of inclusions, exclusions, taxes and any work supplied by other trades. Confirm the selected equipment and any manufacturer or workmanship warranty terms in writing before accepting the quote. A broad price range cannot tell you whether these items are included.

From the first photos to installation

  1. Discuss the entrance. Send the address, photos from both sides, approximate dimensions, your preferred style and how the driveway is used. For a replacement, include photos of the posts, hinges and any existing operator.
  2. Confirm the layout and measurements. Review clearance, panel movement, supports, access and the proposed material. Bring any survey, drawings or strata requirements available for the property.
  3. Agree the design and scope. Confirm the gate, finish, controls, supporting work and responsibilities for permits and electrical work before fabrication.
  4. Plan fabrication and site work. Our service includes custom fabrication and installation. Before digging for posts or conduit, arrange utility information through BC 1 Call, review the responses, and check for infrastructure belonging to owners outside its membership.
  5. Review operation at handover. Check the opening and closing movement. For an automated system, ask for a demonstration of the safety features, power isolation and manual release, plus the equipment instructions and maintenance schedule.

Request a schedule for your specific project. Design approval, permits, fabrication, equipment availability, groundwork and site access can each affect the installation date. Confirm when the driveway may be unavailable so you can arrange parking and deliveries.

North Shore neighbourhoods and our service area

We serve North Vancouver and West Vancouver, as well as Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Surrey and Langley. See our full service area and send your address to discuss the scope and site access.

For an entrance in Lower or Central Lonsdale, consider how installation deliveries and a waiting vehicle will fit around the sidewalk, lane or shared parking. In Lynn Valley, Edgemont and Upper Lonsdale, include photos showing any slope, trees and retaining walls. For Ambleside, Dundarave or British Properties, show the full approach and space beside the entrance, as well as any waterfront exposure. These are details to assess at the property, rather than assumptions about every home in a neighbourhood.

Nearby landmarks: practical references for project planning

Local reference points for describing a project location; these do not indicate completed projects or affiliations.
Landmark Relevant area Useful planning consideration
The Shipyards Lower Lonsdale waterfront, City of North Vancouver For a nearby entrance, identify the delivery approach and a lawful unloading location. Check local event and road notices when agreeing the installation date.
Lynn Canyon Park Lynn Valley, District of North Vancouver Use it as a location reference, then provide the exact address and driveway photos. Show any trees, slope or drainage close to the proposed gate supports.
Ambleside Park Ambleside and the Marine Drive waterfront area, West Vancouver For a nearby property, flag coastal exposure and show where vehicles cross the sidewalk. Include both the street approach and space for the gate to open.

Care for the gate after installation

Follow the instructions for the actual gate finish, hardware and operator. Keep the travel area clear of leaves, gravel and stored items. Look for coating damage, loose supports or changes in alignment, and arrange service if movement becomes uneven.

For automated systems, follow the manufacturer’s schedule for checking safety devices and operation. Stop using a damaged gate or one whose safety features are not working correctly; do not bypass sensors or increase force to overcome a sticking panel. DASMA’s guidance for gate owners explains these maintenance responsibilities.

If your existing entrance needs attention, ask about our gate repair service. An assessment can help establish whether the panel, supports or operating equipment can be repaired, or whether replacement is more appropriate.

Driveway gate FAQs

It depends on the direction and extent of the slope. A swing panel needs clearance over the ground throughout its arc. A sliding or cantilever design may be worth considering, but also needs a suitable travel path, supports and space beside the entrance. Send photos showing the driveway from the street and from inside.

Possibly. Its movement, structure, supports and layout need assessment first. A motor should not be used to overcome a stiff or misaligned gate. Retrofitting may also require changes to the gate, adjoining fence, safety devices and pedestrian access.

Confirm this with the authority for your address and the actual scope. Gate height and location, associated walls, driveway changes and electrical work can involve different rules or approvals. If the entrance is shared or on strata property, confirm the necessary owner or strata permissions before work.

That depends on the operator and any backup system specified. Ask how many operations the selected backup supports under the intended conditions and learn the manufacturer’s manual release procedure. Confirm emergency access arrangements separately.

Screening can reduce views, but check the sightline needed to leave the driveway safely. Pet containment depends on the gaps below and beside the gate, adjoining fencing and how often it is left open. Discuss the actual pet and layout; a gate is not a substitute for supervision around moving equipment.

Send your address, approximate opening width, photos from both directions and your preference for manual or powered operation. Include any existing posts, walls, fencing and electrical equipment, plus known access restrictions. These details help identify what needs closer review.
